Fiction: Craft Workshop

“Read and read to find out what kind of writer you want to be. Write and write to find out what kind of writer you are.”….. Colson Whitehead

June 15th is all about building character, specifically bad ones. Denis Johnson is one of the masters, and so let’s read his story Strangler Bob, which appeared in the New Yorker in 2017 just before his sad and untimely death.

His peeps are murderers, crazies and deviants locked up together in hopeless situations but somehow Johnson gets you laughing and maybe even weeping for their precious, loathsome, fearsome, and unrepentent existences. These are not adjectives Johnson frequently uses. Let’s see what ones he does use to make his cellmates characters not only palatable, pathetic and realistic, but also highly charged and readable.

BRING IN YOUR CURRENTLY FAVORITE BAD CHARACTER, READ THE PASSAGE THAT STANDS OUT FOR YOU ALOUD. LET’S DISCOVER WHY AND HOW THEY WORK.

We’ll talk about identity appropriation, the difficulties writing a strong character, good or bad, and how to pull off an enthralling miscreant.

You don’t have to be actually writing fiction in order to feel welcome in this workshop, craft conversations are beyond genre.
